The fob

A single piece of bark-tan leather with a blackened-steel split ring. I blacken the ring myself with a ferric chloride dip and then oil it to seal the finish. The ring will eventually patina to gunmetal. That is what you want.

Why blackened steel

Because chromed split rings peel. Because nickel rings look like kitchen hardware. Blackened steel is correct.

Wear

The leather will darken and go softer in the hand inside a month. You are going to carry this every day. I carry the prototype. It is six years old. It looks better now than the day I cut it.
